Major General Buff Blount retired from the Army in Jan 2005, from his position as the Army’s Deputy G-3 (Plans and Operations) in the Pentagon. As the Army’s Deputy G-3, he managed the requirements, budget and training for the Army. This required frequent interaction with Congress as they resourced the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Previously he was the Commanding General, 3d Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Stewart, GA. General Blount gave up command of the 3 ID after bringing them home from Iraq, where they were the lead force for the Army in defeating the Iraqi army and capturing Baghdad. As the vanguard for coalition operations, the Division moved 8,000 vehicles, 100 aircraft and 22,000 soldiers 750 kilometers in 21 days, 500 in the first three days. This was the fastest and longest offensive attack, accomplished in the shortest period of time, in the history of the Army.
Major General Blount has a 33-year history of outstanding leadership and service in the Army. From 1997 to 2001, General Blount served as the Program Manager for a Saudi Arabian military modernization program, serving as special military advisor to Crown Prince Abdullah, now King Abdullah. General Blount also has experience in other Middle Eastern Countries and Europe. He has served in a variety of leadership and staff positions around the world.
General Blount is a 1971 Graduate of Southern Miss and holds a Master of Science Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U S Naval War College. His numerous Military awards include two Distinguished Service Medals, Silver Star, Legion of Merit (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), and Meritorious Service Medal (with six Oak Leaf Clusters).
In addition to Private Consulting and Lobbying, General Blount has recently retired from a position as a Distinguished Guest Lecturer in National Defense and Strategic Studies at University of Southern Miss and has an Endowed Professorship in National Security and Military History named in his honor. General Blount is also currently Co-founder and Chairman of Mav6 an Aerospace and defense oriented company focused on research and rapid technology development and integration, recognized by Inc. 500 this year as one of the fastest growing companies in the Nation. General Blount has also been selected by the Governor to be the Chairman of the newly formed Mississippi Defensive Initiative.
